About the Lykos Wolfalike
The Lykos Wolfalike, developed in Australia, is gaining popularity for its wolf-like appearance and calm, friendly nature. The Lykos Wolfalike is registered and governed by the Lykos Wolfalike Council of Australia. All health test results and pedigrees of any breeding dogs are independently verified.
The Lykos breed is made up of purebred dog breeds, predominantly the German Shepherd Dog, Alaskan Malamute, Siberian Husky. Selective and careful breeding since the beginning of the breeding program, utilising certain breeding foundation lines with great health and temperament has seen the breed flourish in the early stages of development, making the bloodlines used quite predictable.
Despite their wild aesthetic, these dogs are known for being gentle, sociable and easy-going, making them excellent family companions and well suited for dog sports and active lifestyles. There are Lykos Wolfalikes proving themselves in purpose as Assistance Dogs, Therapy dogs, while also competing in many dog sports throughout Australia.
The Lykos typically has a fun, relaxed temperament. Many enjoy being active and adventurous yet are equally content spending quiet time with their human "pack." One of their strengths is their potential for strong recall and off leash reliability, especially when training and socialisation start early.
Some dogs may have medium prey drive and therefore require early socialisation and training around livestock. Generally, the Lykos is not known for high prey drives, making them more manageable in a range of environments.
While Lykos dogs may alert their owners by barking when something seems amiss, they are not bred for or suited to traditional guard dog roles. Their temperament is better aligned with companionship, social interaction, and participation in family life rather than protection work.
As with any breed, training, exercise, and proper socialisation are essential to raise a well-adjusted and confident dog. With the right upbringing, the Lykos offers a beautiful blend of intelligence, loyalty, and a peaceful spirit - making them a truly rewarding companion.
Is a Lykos right for you?
Owning a Lykos requires commitment, experience, and responsible pet ownership. These dogs thrive with consistent training, regular exercise, proper nutrition, and socialisation. If you understand working dogs, training and behaviour, you will find these dogs excellent family companions that have the intelligence to excel in many disciplines.
People with experience with Siberian Huskies, German or Swiss Shepherds and Alaskan Malamutes will find a Lykos has the best traits of those breeds due to their selective breeding, carefully developed and bred for specific temperament traits. Consistent training makes the dog reliable in everyday situations.
They make excellent family dogs, but as with any dog of any breed, children and dogs should always be supervised. Children must learn to respect a dog’s space and how to appropriately interact with dogs. Ultimately, successful ownership comes down to understanding, effort, alongside the dog having consistent training, structure and boundaries.
Diet
Lykos dogs do well on a variety of balanced diets. While some owners choose to feed raw, most are raised on premium dry kibble, often
supplemented with eggs, sardines, fresh fruits, vegetables, and human grade meats including organ cuts. Fortunately, Lykos dogs are not
typically prone to food allergies or intolerances, making them relatively easy to feed. As with any breed, a nutritious, balanced diet tailored to their activity level and life stage helps them thrive.
Coat & Grooming
Double-coated breeds like the Lykos require grooming to keep their coats healthy and functional. These dogs have a dense undercoat beneath a layer of guard hairs and are heavy shedders, if the coat is not regularly maintained. They come in short coat and long coat varieties. The long coat variety require more regular brushing to avoid any matts around the ears or behind the legs. They have a blow out twice a year but also shed all year round. The best tools to use during shedding season are a rake and a slicker brush. Maintain the coat with proper brushing, occasional baths. Using a doggy blow dryer is essential to blowing out the coat after a bath. If you do this once every 2-3 months, you’ll find it very easy to maintain.
